Zanzibar is a semi-autonomous part of Tanzania, in East Africa comprising of the Zanzibar Archipelago in the Indian Ocean, and numerous small islands. The two main ones are Unguja (the main island, informally referred to as Zanzibar) and Pemba. Britain established a protectorate (1890) that became an independent sultanate in December 1963 and a republic after an uprising in January 1964. Later it joined Tanganyika to form a new republic in Africa that was renamed Tanzania. The capital of Zanzibar, located on the island of Unguja, is Zanzibar City, and its historic centre, known as Stone Town, is a World Heritage Site. Zanzibar's main industries are spices, raffia, and tourism. In particular, the islands produce cloves, nutmeg, cinnamon and pepper. For this reason, the islands, together with Tanzania's Mafia Island, are sometimes called the Spice Islands of Africa. Zanzibar's ecology is of note for being the home of the endemic Zanzibar Red Colobus Monkey, the Zanzibar Servaline Genet, and the (possibly extinct) Zanzibar Leopard.

Beach activities range from volleyball to horse riding, windsurfing, diving and kitesurfing. Unguja and Pemba are endowed with some of the best and most varied dive sites in the world, with diving courses catering for the novice up to Dive Master Standards. Steep wall dives, drift dives and world – class coral formations make this area a prime location for the experienced deep water divers. Diving from a boat in the clear, blue ocean of Zanzibar is one of the most exhilarating experiences to be had on a holiday on this part of East Africa.
